Partnering upwards

Overview

The boss-subordinate relationship is a partnership, or at least should be. We are very familiar with the performance management process which is primarily a top-down discussion based on predetermined objectives. We are not so familiar with the upwards managing of the relationship. By putting these two approaches together, one can predict a far better outcome for both parties as well as the organisation. On many occasions staff are faced with a manager who inadvertently negatively affect their ability to perform the very tasks that have been allocated. Gaining some knowledge and skill in this area is imperative.

In this programme you will learn:
  • the benefits and need for managing these relationships better
  • differences between manipulation and managing upwards
  • partnering with your manager/supervisor
  • how to develop and maintain the relationship
  • understanding personality and style differences
  • use of key communication skills
  • critical do’s and don’ts in the relationship
  • influencing skills
  • feedback skills and using I language
  • working for a win-win outcome.
