Play therapy

Play is relaxing, pleasurable, happening in the here and now, and involves the self in various degrees. Play offers individuals the freedom to explore, to enjoy, and to be oneself.  Play is children’s means of making sense of their experience in order to make it part of themselves. Children possess intensive and complex emotions, but they lack the vocabulary to express them. More often than not, they are not allowed or do not feel free to express these emotions. Playing circumvents their defensive mechanisms. A trained play therapist may observe and guide to assist with resolving conflicts, expressing grief, and empowering the child.

Through play, children learn the skills they need to participate in the world and in life; through play they get to engage in meaningful activities that enhance all aspects of their development: physical, social, and cognitive and language development. By playing, children learn to relate to the world and the people around them. It is therefore the perfect channel to tap into the child’s world.

The one-day workshop will entail:

Orientation regarding play therapy: definition, purpose, applications, benefits, process.

Building a relationship with the child client and understanding the importance of the relationship as being therapeutical.

Case study: working towards identifying emotions and optimising emotional self-regulation (mad, bad, glad, and sad).

Therapy techniques to assist with loss, bereavement, and grief.
